Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson, the Chillicothe ironworker on the 20th of February, 1937. The mother of her child, Lillian Ryan worked as housekeeper. Nancy was the first out of six kids. Her father's love of music as well as the music he played at home were a huge influence on Nancy when she was a little girl. At just 4 years old, she knew that she was going to be a star in the singing world. The talent she developed was cultivated due to her participation in the choir at church. After high school the singer began appearing regularly on Skyline Melodies. She was 15 when she was crowned the winner of the TV talent show. In the year she turned fifteen, she began her career in night clubs. Nancy dropped out of Central State University in Ohio after matriculating for an entire year. In 1956 she released her debut album with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with whom she toured from 1956 and 1958. Nancy's initial Dot Records recording was made when she was a member of the big band of the Carolyn Club. Cannonball told her she should make the move in New York and go to The Big Town for the rest of her singing career. In just a few months, she was offered an offer to sing in The Blue Morocco Night Club on Boston Road in The Bronx the place where her agent heard her, and she was signed. His agent signed her with Capitol in 1960. Her debut was that year. Guess who? Capitol published five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. After Adderley's influences she shifted her focus from R&B towards jazz. Nancy Wilson's 1962 collaboration together with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top, and in 1963, she had her debut hit Tell Me the Truth. It led her to perform in New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America in the year following and she became a star.
