Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson as an ironworker in Chillicothe on the 20th of February, 1937. The mother of her child, Lillian Ryan worked as household helper. Nancy was the eldest of six kids. Nancy grew up listening to her dad's records and his passion for music. By the age of four, she knew she would like to become a musician. She developed her musical talent through singing in choirs at church. She won a TV-talent show at the age of 15 and started appearing regularly on the Tv program Skyline Melodies while still in high school. When she was fifteen, she began her professional career at nightclubs. Nancy was 17 when she graduated highschool. After attending Ohio Central State College - today Central State University - for only one semester Nancy quit to become an experienced performer. In 1956, she recorded her debut album along with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. The group toured with Rusty Bryant between 1956 and 1958. Nancy began her recording career with Dot Records in 1956, while with the group. Cannonball advised her to make the move into New York and go to The Big Town to further her singing career. Within a short time, she was singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club which is located at Boston Road near The Bronx. Adderley's representative saw her singing and instantly signed her. He obtained a contract for the label Capitol records in 1960, and she debuted that year, with a single. Guess Who? Capitol Records released 5 Nancy Wilson albums over a period of two years. The first was focused on R&B, but under Adderley's influence, she began to embrace jazz. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley and their 1962 collaboration helped her reach the top. She had her breakthrough hit Tell Me the Truth by 1963. It led her to perform at the New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America that year, and she quickly became a legend.
