Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson who was the Chillicothe ironworker on February 20, 1937. She was the daughter of Lillian Ryan worked as household helper. Nancy was the youngest of six kids. Nancy was inspired by her father's musical tastes and the records that were played in her home. As a young girl she had already developed a strong sense of who she was and the things she wanted to be. The church choir encouraged her to develop this talent. At the age of 15 and had a chance to win a talent show on TV and began appearing on the Skyline Melodies Tv Show while being in High School. The nightclubs where she was a regular performer, she began singing at the age of fifteen. Nancy was 17 when she graduated from high-school and matriculated at Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for one year, before deciding to pursue a career as a musician. Her first recording was with Rusty's Carolyn Club Big Band in 1956. They performed from 1956 until 1958. Nancy started recording with Dot Records in 1956, while with the group. Cannonball Aderley suggested that she make the move into New York so as to increase her chances of success. In 1959 she moved in The Big Town. She was commissioned to sing for The Blue Morocco Night Club located in The Bronx and there was a place where Adderley's agent had come across her. In 1960, he enlisted her to Capitol Records and in that same year she released her debut single. Guess Who I See Today? Her albums were a hit and Capitol released 5 Nancy Wilson albums in two years. She began by focusing on R&B, but under Adderley's influence, she began to embrace jazz. The 1962 group collaboration of Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley was instrumental in propelling her to prominence and her breakthrough smash Tell Me the Truth in 1963. Following that year, she was asked to perform at New York's Coconut Grove, the most sought-after nightclub in America.
